Adult Learning
Overview
Adult learning, also known as andragogy, is the process by which adults acquire new knowledge or skills. It differs from traditional child-focused education (pedagogy) in several key ways:
- Self-Direction: Adults are typically more self-directed in their learning, taking responsibility for their own education and often seeking out learning opportunities that align with their personal or professional goals.
- Experience-Based: Adult learners bring a wealth of life experiences to the learning process, which can be a valuable resource for learning. This prior knowledge influences how they understand new information and solve problems.
- Relevance: Adults are motivated to learn when the material is relevant to their lives and goals. They prefer practical, problem-solving approaches that can be immediately applied.
- Readiness to Learn: Adults are usually ready to learn things they feel they need to know or can apply to real-world situations. This readiness is often linked to social roles and responsibilities.
- Internal Motivation: While external motivators like promotions and salary increases are important, adult learners are also driven by internal factors such as personal growth, satisfaction, and the desire to improve their quality of life.
- Barriers: Adults often face unique barriers to learning, such as time constraints, financial limitations, and balancing learning with other responsibilities like work and family.
- Collaborative Learning: Many adult learners benefit from collaborative learning environments where they can share experiences and learn from peers.
At Excel Training Institute, we understand these characteristics that help us ass educators to design effective adult learning programs that are engaging, practical, and respectful of the time and experiences of the learners.
